  • HD-DVD TechnologyThe technology promised better resolutions meaning more data on the disk per square inch of disk space or higher data density. Life would have been better yet better technologies and competition from the Blu-ray camp proved to be too much to sustain the development of the High-Definition/High-Density DVD. The disk technology was supposed to double or even triple the amount of data stored onto each DVD. Standard or first generation DVD’s could store 4.7GB of data which is impressive considering the previous technology, Cd’s only at 800mb maximum.
HD-DVD was supposed to provide up to 15GB of data per layer, up to 30GB for dual layer disks which is a lot of data onto a single DVD disk. Blu-Ray on the other hand had 50GB which made it more enticing, having more data onto a single disk and cross-compatibility with Cd’s and DVD’s allows the same technology to read and use the many disks that are out in the market. The standard was put to rest in 2008, forever resigned to the history books as a technology that almost was. Giving way to more promising data storage solutions, many of which are already in their final stages of development for release onto the market.
